Straight walls?

Ok I got the names from my last post right, only to encounter the next problem. While testing my mod i noticed that the walls around my plantation were never in one line and didnt touch (most of the times)
So i went over the wall again trying to line them, tested idint work.
I decided to copy a piece of the wall from Drenns plantation and placed it, starting to remake my entire wall. This time I used 5 pieces at once but had set object movement speed to 0.10 so I could make the perfect fit.
I test again: There is even room between the pieces I copied from Drens farm. It is only visible from an angle but as you walk by the wall there is always a piece that you see in this angle. This is frustrating! How the F%^K am i supposed to make a wall without the possibillty to see trough.

I'm betting that you haven't got snap-to-grid on.

Even at a setting as low as 8, Snap-to-Grid will save a LOT of headaches like these.

I made my first level without snap-to grid, and I had to spend a lot of time to fix it up later.

Use the grid, preferably with values that are powers of 2 - 64 for large buildings, or 32, 16, or 8; set it in the Preferences, and then turn on Snap to Grid.

Always use powers of two for the grid: 1,2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64,128. Most of the statics in the Construction Set have dimensions that are a power of two, so they won't fit properly if you use other settings.

When I'm building something from scratch, I usually start with a large setting (32, 64, or 128) to get walls, floors, and other large statics placed. Then I switch to lower settings for putting in furniture and other smaller statics.

If you need to fine tune the placing of an object, turn off snap to grid after you have it in approximately the right place.

Note:

When you have snap to grid enabled, objects will snap in all three dimensions anytime you move them, including the z axis. So don't bother fine tuning vertical (z-axis) position until you have the object snapped into place horizontally. The turn off grid snap and drag the object to the right height.

those hlaalu walls are just crappy... Even if you set the snap-angle to 1 or 2 it still won't fit together. I spent a whole day to get a city with hlaalu walls around it. Seriously, I'd almost hate the contruction set!

I disagree.

Snap in position VERTICALLY, before you do it horizontally. If you do it horizontally first, when you align it vertically it will be out of place and you will have to re-align it horizontally.

Snap in position VERTICALLY, before you do it horizontally. If you do it horizontally first, when you align it vertically it will be out of place and you will have to re-align it horizontally.




My advice is aimed at the way most people seem to encounter the problem, based on the posts I've seen in this forum.

Whichever order you do it in: if you align an object in one axis with snap to grid off , then move it in another axis with snap to grid on , the original unsnapped alignment will be lost because the editor snaps in all three dimensions.

One additional bit of advice: The snap-to-grid is essential, but only works well if you are building walls etc on a 90-degree angle. So turn on the 'Angle Snap' button as well as the 'Grid Snap' and it will help.

If you need a set of walls or something at an odd angle, build it 'square' on the regular 90-degree angle, then once you're sure it's finished turn off the angle snap, select everything and rotate it as a group. If you ever have to change it, rotate it back aligned to the X & Y axes so you can use grid snap again.

Dougall_McAngus: The Hlaalu walls are 256-units long, so they work just fine with a grid snap setting of 64 or even 128. I just did some right now to confirm the length. Try again; getting used to the grid snap will make things much easier & faster for you.

One other tip: If you have the grid-snap turned on, simply dropping a piece such a Hlaalu wall into the Render window will not snap it to the grid! Make sure you grab the piece and move it slightly, you'll see it jump to the nearest grid point. Once that first piece is aligned, all the others will attach easily.
